Washington's Farewell Address
Washington's Farewell Address
1796
-
On May 15th, 1786, George Washington gave his Farewell Address for the people of the United States. George Washington used this speech/letter as his way of assuring the people about the future of the nation. Many people feared a future without George Washington as the president, because he was the first President of the United States who gave the country such a great beginning. However, Washington says how no one should fear anything, or feel in the least bit regretful, because he himself feels that he was unworthy and unqualified for the position. On the other hand, he claims that it wasn’t his supposed qualities and expertise that led the country to have such a prosperous start, but rather the unity, support, and leadership of the people. He uses most of the letter as a parting speech to appease the people while wishing them the best.
