George Washington's Letter
George Washington's Letter
1782
-
In the letter to George Washington, Lewis Nicola suggested that he take the role as monarch. This is often misinterpreted as Nicola suggesting that Washington assume the role of king of the nation, yet the actual purpose was more of a suggestion to implement a stronger leadership. Nicola suggested this due to the problems and weaknesses of the military at the time in contrast to the power that Britain had in their military. George Washington responded by rejecting Nicolas proposal, presuming he meant to take the role of king rather than just establish a stronger leadership and presence.
