Washington's Inaugural Address
Washington's Inaugural Address

1789

  • George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789. On the day of his inauguration, he gave an address to the members of the fledgling United States Congress. Throughout the address Washington displays humility while accepting his position as President of the United States and focuses on the premise and hopefulness of the United States, stating that “the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty, and the destiny of the Republican model of Government, are justly considered as deeply, perhaps as finally staked, on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.” The core of this speech was meant to embody the Republican ideals of the newfound country during the post-revolutionary era.
