Susan B. Anthony's Trial Account
Susan B. Anthony's Trial Account
1874
-
This document is an account of the legal proceedings of suffragette Susan B. Anthony’s 1873 trial. To protest the barring of women from voting, Anthony decided to vote illegally. The account provides the legal arguments for and against a woman’s right to vote. To support her case, Anthony references various important documents in American history, including the Fourteenth Amendment (which prevents the abridgment of the rights of citizens of the United States), the Declaration of Independence, and the Preamble to the Constitution. Women would gain full suffrage in 1920 through the passage of the 19th Amendment.
